Like SAM containers, PODS® can be delivered to your location and the company has an online space calculator. But you won’t find the same smooth interior walls, translucent roofing, tie-down rings and many additional features offered by SAM containers. There are also more restrictions when it comes to scheduling, cancellations and claims, and the company doesn’t offer local packing and loading professionals (they only refer you to them).

PACK RAT®

PACK RAT® is another well-known company with more than 60 locations across the country. Like SAM, they offer container delivery to your location, but, like PODS®, they aren’t locally owned and operated in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Some features unique to PACK RAT® containers, however, are the all-steel construction and multiple container sizes. That being said, the barn-style doors require additional space for opening and must be a consideration for the overall footprint of the PACK RAT®.. PACK RAT moving and storage containers also don’t have the same useful features you’ll find in SAM containers (e.g. translucent roof, tie-down rings, smooth interior walls, etc.) and we can’t speak to the company’s dedication to customer service or satisfaction.

U-PACK®

A company that specializes in long-distance moves, U-PACK® is another nationally-owned franchise storage container company with several locations across the country. The company’s process for fuel charges may be confusing to some, but you can enjoy container delivery to your location and an online space calculator like you do with a SAM container. As with many of the other companies on this list, U-PACK® only recommends local packing and loading help instead of partnering with other companies to offer it directly to you. It’s also important to note that you have limited time to load (three days) and unload (three days) with U-PACK®. SAM, on the other hand, lets you load and unload on your timeline, with no pressure to get it done quickly.

CoolBox®

As the name suggests, CoolBox® Portable Storage Containers are known for their temperature control. With an insulated design, standard size and steel construction, your belongings are protected against temperature changes and adverse weather conditions (like SAM). Another benefit of CoolBox® is that they are family-owned and non-franchise, just like SAM as well. But CoolBox® container doors swing open instead of roll up, which can be tricky in certain spaces and is a consideration for where you want to place your storage container. The company is also not as well-known as others, which means there is little brand recognition (and perhaps more uncertainty with customer satisfaction and what to expect).

Conclusion:

As with many elements of moving and storage, your choice for the storage container company you partner with depends on what is most important to you. Do you prioritize customer service? A locally owned company can provide better attention to detail and area expertise than a company that is nationally owned. Is convenience a priority? Consider the door type and container features that make them easy to use. Worried about theft or the weather? Make sure the container is durably built and has the safety features you need. Do your research, compare companies, ask questions and don’t automatically go with the cheapest quote.
