6 Tips for Storing Household Items During the Summer

6-Tips-for-Storing-Household-Items-During-the-Summer-300x174-1We’re all familiar with the heat that summer can bring. That’s why we come up with sayings to relate the heat to something beyond our comprehension. But what are blue blazes, exactly, and how does it get hotter than them? Also, can you really fry an egg on the sidewalk? Why are pepper patches involved?

We don’t know, but we do know that storing household items during the summer can be tricky. If you want to ensure your household belongings are kept safe and accessible during the warm summer months, here are some general summer storage tips.

  1. Clean and Fold Clothes

Since the weather is warmer, you won’t be needing those heavy winter coats, jackets, pants, boots and other clothing. Before you store them, be sure they’re clean so you avoid the development of odor. It is also a good idea to fold them to avoid wrinkles and make sure there isn’t anything in the pockets.

  1. Store Temperature-Sensitive Items Appropriately

We know those Hanukkah candles don’t have much use in June or July, but they won’t survive the heat. Store temperature-sensitive items like fur, leather, electronics, books, musical instruments and appliances in a cooler area of your home, or (even better) in a climate-controlled storage container (which we’ll talk about in a sec).

  1. Keep Needed Items Toward the Front

Regardless of where you’re storing your household items, make sure they’re easily accessible. You don’t want your broom to be hidden behind a snowblower or holiday decorations. When storing items during the summer, think about the way you’ll organize and keep winter or less-used items toward the back.

  1. Consider Using a Storage Container

A household storage container is a great place to store all the household items you won’t need during the summer. You can load them up at your convenience and then have the container stored out of the way at a facility. Many of these storage facilities are climate-controlled, which will protect those temperature-sensitive items.

  1. Make Sure You Have Enough Space

Don’t make the mistake of renting a storage container that isn’t big enough. Also don’t underestimate the amount of storage space you may have in your attic, garage or other area of home. Evaluate your space needs before you start.

  1. Label Everything

Finally, make sure all your summer items have tags or labels on them. Think about unpacking while you’re packing and you’ll save time later. When fall or winter rolls around, do you really want to spend hours opening boxes just to see what’s inside? Invest a little time organizing and labeling your summer items while you can.
